Dublin Recorded Highest Median Earnings in 2023, CSO Reveals

New data from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) reveals that Dublin had the highest median annual earnings in 2023, with a figure of €47,873. Following Dublin were Kildare (€46,819), Meath (€44,902), Wicklow (€44,750), and Cork (€44,348), all of which reported median earnings above the national median of €43,221.

The CSO also highlighted that Donegal (€35,010), Monaghan (€35,894), and Kerry (€37,151) had the lowest median annual earnings last year.

Additionally, the CSO noted that 56.7% of the country's top 1% of earners were based in Dublin.

Gender Representation in the Workforce

The CSO’s data also shows a near-equal gender split in employment last year. Men accounted for 50.9% of all employees working for at least 50 weeks, while women made up 49.1%. However, men continued to earn higher average incomes and comprised nearly three-quarters of the top 1% of earners.

In contrast, women made up more than three-quarters of the workforce in health and social care sectors but represented just over one-third of the highest earners in those fields.

Age-Based Employment Trends

The CSO’s report also highlighted significant gender gaps in employment among different age groups. For those aged 30-39, men held 52.3% of jobs, while women accounted for 47.7%. Among the 25-29 age group, men made up 51.8% of the workforce, while women represented 48.2%.
