New research has revealed that more than two-thirds of retail workers in Ireland have encountered abusive or inappropriate language or behavior from the public.
One in five employees reported experiencing such behavior on a weekly basis.
Nearly 75% of retail staff said they had witnessed or heard abusive or inappropriate conduct directed at a colleague.
The survey, which included 500 retail employees, was commissioned by Circle K, Maxol, and MrPRICE Branded Bargains.
The findings also showed a higher incidence of abusive behavior towards female employees. Seventy-five percent of women surveyed reported experiencing this behavior, compared to 60% of men.
Among retail workers who encountered abusive behavior, 35% said it was violent, aggressive, or threatening, while 22% noted that it involved discriminatory language.
The most common forms of misconduct included foul language, discriminatory comments, violent or threatening behavior, and physical contact.
Younger workers reported experiencing more abusive behavior than their older counterparts, with those over 55 reporting the lowest rates.
